2️⃣ How Prayer Is Performed
The Preconditions of Prayer (6): Purification from ritual impurity (performing ablution/ghusl), purification from physical filth (cleanliness of body/clothing/place), covering the body appropriately (satr al-awrah), the prayer time, facing the qibla, and intention.
Ablution steps: Intention → Hands → Mouth (3 times) → Nose (3 times) → Face (3 times) → Right-left arms to the elbows → Wiping the head → Wiping inside/behind the ears → Wiping the neck → Right-left feet to the ankles.
Tayammum: Dry ablution performed with clean earth/sand when water is unavailable or cannot be used. Ghusl: Washing the entire body so that no part remains dry (full ritual bath).
The Pillars of Prayer (6): The opening takbir (beginning with "Allahu Akbar"), qiyam (standing), qira'ah (reciting the Qur'an), ruku (bowing), sujud (prostration), and the final sitting (sitting long enough to recite the Tahiyyat).
Congregational Prayer: Friday and Eid prayers must be performed in congregation at the mosque. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "A prayer performed in congregation is twenty-seven times more meritorious than a prayer performed alone." During the Friday prayer, the imam ascends the minbar (pulpit) and delivers the khutbah (sermon). The funeral prayer is performed standing only, without ruku or sujud.
❌ Common Misconceptions
❌ Some see prayer merely as an "obligation."

3️⃣ What the Worship of Prayer Brings to a Person
Prayer keeps a person's awareness of servitude to Allah alive and keeps them away from wrongdoing. Through ablution, a person is purified both spiritually and physically. The Holy Qur'an states: "...prayer restrains from indecency and evil..." According to our Prophet, sujud (prostration) is the moment when a servant is closest to Allah.
Among the Muslims who gather at mosques, a sense of brotherhood develops without distinction of race, color, or language; cooperation and solidarity increase.
💭 Think and Answer
Which aspect of prayer (discipline, peace, communal worship, etc.) do you think provides the most benefit?
👨👩👧 I Do This With My Family
Try performing a prayer in congregation with your family, and share how you felt afterward.
4️⃣ Learning a Prayer: The Tahiyyat
Tahiyyat means being free from every shortcoming, greeting, and wishing health and well-being. This prayer, recited while sitting during prayer, begins with greetings and praise to Allah, continues with a request for mercy upon our Prophet, and ends with the declaration of faith (kalima-i shahadah).
| Recitation | Meaning |

| Esselamu aleyna ve ala ibadillahissalihin | May peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. |
| Eshedu ella ilahe illallah ve eshedu enne Muhammeden abduhu ve rasuluh | I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. |
🔍 Let's Think Deeply
To deeply evaluate what you have learned in this unit, ask yourself these questions:
- How does this knowledge affect my life?
- Why is this concept important?
- What is its equivalent in daily life?
⚖️ Moral Dilemma — What Would You Do?
On a day when you are very tired, it is hard to make it to prayer time. Is it more correct to postpone the prayer and perform it later, or to perform it right away even though it is difficult at that moment? Answer by thinking about the meaning of prayer as "being in the presence of Allah."
